A selftaught jewellery craftsman, Gilles Maurel uses contemporary techniques to create his works. Since 1975, when he first started working with metal, he has shown various collections featuring both silver and gold. Reticulation (Def: To mark with lines resembling a network) and coloured oxidation on silver are significant part of his artistic approach. From his studio in St Sauveur in Laurentians, Maurel creates unique pieces or small series that are sold in various boutiques in Canada, the United States, and Australia. The jury at the 1995 Salon des Metiers d’Art honoured him with the Jean--Marie Gauvreau award, bestowed each year in recognition of the balance, mastery, and aesthetic appeal of craftsmans production. |
